Shhh... Don't let the cat out of the bag! It's a secret.

Cat idioms

the cat's meow = something or someone very impressive, desirable and fancy

Let's go to that new restaurant; it's the cat's meow.

I love this singer; she's the cat's meow.

It's raining cats and dogs. = It's raining very hard.

a cat nap = a short sleep; a siesta

I'm going to have a cat nap before dinner.

to let the cat out of the bag = to tell a secret (that you should not have)

Why did you let the cat out of the bag about mum's surprise spa weekend?

It was supposed to be a secret.

Oh no; I let the cat out of the bag.  I told Sarah that we are getting a dog.  It was meant to be a surprise.

Has the cat got your tongue? = Why aren't you speaking?  Don't you have anything to say?

Teacher:  Johnnie, where is your homework?

Johnnie:  (says nothing)

Teacher:  Has the cat got your tongue?  Say something!  Where is your homework?

Johnnie:  The dog ate it.

a copycat = someone who copies (mimics) someone else

Why are you wearing the same dress as me?  Don't be such a copycat!

She is such a copycat.  She's always doing the same things I do.

to fight like cat and dog = to continually argue (verbally fight)

My brother and I used to fight like cat and dog when we were young children.  We didn't get along well.

to put the cat among the pigeons = to cause a disruption or a disturbance; to cause worry

The teacher is going to put the cat among the pigeons when she tells the students they have a big test tomorrow.

I put the cat among the pigeons when I told my parents I didn't want to do my homework.

Curiosity killed the cat. = Don't be too inquisitive; don't ask so many questions, because it will get you into trouble.

Don't keep asking me where we are going for our holidays; you know, curiosity killed the cat.

What's that in your bag?  I know; curiosity killed the cat.  You don't have to tell me.

While the cat's away, the mice will play. = When the boss (or someone in authority) is not here, we will do what we want.

Great!  The teacher isn't here today.  When the cat's away, the mice will play!  We can do anything we like.

My boss isn't here today, so you know what they say, "When the cat's away, the mice will play".
