oxymoron = a figure of speech with 2 contradictory words or parts // paradox = a self-contradictory statement that could be true

While we were driving to my parents' house for a short holiday, I said to my husband, "I'm going to have a restful working holiday" which sounds like a paradox as the purpose of a holiday is to get away from work.

Here are some funny oxymorons:

a working vacation / working holiday

awfully good

bittersweet

a civil war

a deafening silence

an exact estimate

good grief (an exclamation of irritation, surprise or frustration)

a guest host

jumbo shrimp

a loud whisper

a negative growth

an only choice

an open secret

an original copy

plastic glasses

in poor health

pretty ugly (here "pretty" = fairly / quite)

a small crowd

a student teacher

terribly good

true fiction

unbiased opinion

shallow depths

What oxymorons do you have in your language?
